THE MILITARY UNIFORMS

Over the years, humans have used different things to protect themselves from the surrounding dangers. Clothes are one of the first things that we started to used as a way to keep us safe, the cold temperatures led us to wear animal skin as a method to stay warm, and so it continues. After we were cover from cold, we started to create representative clothing to be able to recognize the people who were the same as us (poor, rich, military, royalty), a clear example is soldiers, they were a type of clothing called military uniform or army uniform, but, what is an uniform? Well, the Cambridge dictionary says that a uniform is “a particular set of clothes that has to be worn by the members of the same organization or group of people”.

So, we can say that a military uniform or army uniform, is a set of clothes worn by soldiers; military uniforms are so important because they do not only represent the army, military uniforms help the soldiers to identify their allies in the battlefield. One of the most important things that the military uniform does is that it helps to represent pride for being part of the army and it looks to strengthen ties between the army and the nation. These feelings justify the fact that a soldier participates in private ceremonies, e. g. marriage, by wearing his military uniform. The army uniform should encourage the participation of other soldiers in patriotic ceremonies.

Actually, the military uniforms helped in the past to distinguished soldiers from citizens and they started to add emblems, and belts to army uniforms to help identify ranks, also colors began to be used to make the distinction. Colors eventually became associated with countries, such as red for the military uniforms of Great Britain. Over time more elements were added to army uniforms such as an improvement in the quality of the fabrics, jackets, and trousers, insignia indicating rank, flags indicating the country of the soldier, shoulder pads, number of buttons, etc. A lot of elements have been added to military uniforms such as brass and leather buttons, buttoned pockets and the use of badges.

The most glorious and elegant era for military uniforms was in Europe from years 1793-1815, were officers wore well-equipped suits with extravagant gold or silver braids, gold buttons in crowds, and polished leather. They were designed to allow the user to look good wherever they are. These military uniforms conferred authority, status, power, and glamour and offered impressive and attractive exhibits. Regular soldiers wore less extravagant versions but always wore elegant, tight-fitting military uniforms. Until the end of the 19th century, soldiers marched and wore the same military uniform, although it was often restrictive in combat as they were not very comfortable.

There are many types of military uniforms or army uniforms, they come in a different range of colors and prints. Their use is based on the place the soldiers are in, for example, if they are inside the military institution or school, they might wear a military uniform or army uniform with a bold color, and instead of a jacket they would be wearing a military t-shirt, but, if they are on a mission or in war or so, you might find them wearing a military uniform printed in camouflage. Camouflage is one of the most difficult prints to do because the color must not be mixed and they have to match the surroundings, that’s why the prints of camouflage change in the military uniforms or army uniforms, some of the most used are these:

Erdl: This one is used in the military uniforms that are made for being in the jungle, this print was used during the Vietnam War.
Pattern woodland: It is the most used camouflage print in military uniforms nowadays.
CADPAT: The Canadian Disruptive Pattern is the best camouflage for military uniforms wore in tropical weather. It reduces by 40% the chances to be detected.
The military uniforms are really important, the fabrics must be made with cotton, wool, polycotton, poly-viscose, so they allow the soldier to feel comfortable and free to do all kind of activities.
